Day 25

Dear Diary,

Happy Christmas! When we woke this morning there was a light blanket of snow on the ground outside the shelter of our trees, and Aspen had the best time prancing through the snow and building a small igloo.

When the sun was high in the sky and the snow began to melt we headed back to our grove and Aspen unwrapped her gifts. Although the presents were nice, I think the best part of Christmas was being together with my family, at home, and a white Christmas.

Day 24

Dear Diary,

I finally made it home! This morning I woke up and practically sprinted the rest of the way home from Driftveil City (or at least it felt like it). My mother and Aspen were so happy to see me, they had begun to wonder if I would make it home by Christmas. We spent time together sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows, and I told them about everything that had happened since I left. When my mother heard about the purple flash as the last presents were returned, and the Enigma berry that was left behind, she asked to see it. She then told me about the legend of Darkrai, the mythical Pokemon and the Enigma berry he is said to carry, and how there had never been a confirmed sighting. How mysterious!

I made sure to stop by and say hello to the Tranquill that live nearby and they wanted to test out my new battle skills, but after everything that happened I was ready to get some rest. It’s so great to be home.

Day 23

Dear Diary,

Making my way home on Route 5 and to the Driftveil Drawbridge I realized how much more confident I was then when I left home. Where I once hid to watch a wild Minccino and trainer battle, now I trotted past without fear of being captured. In fact, after meeting a wild Emolga in some deep grass, I challenged her to battle. In the end, the wild Emolga and I tied. She knew a powerful move called Discharge, while I knew Horn Leech. That battle will stay in my mind as a turning point in my life, of when I gained confidence in myself.

Driftveil Drawbridge was much the same as I remembered it. There were Swanna and Wingull flying overhead, and I made my way across as swiftly as I could to Driftveil City. I could see the forest I call home ahead, and I was greatly tempted to push on through the night, but logically I knew that it wasn’t safe. I found the same tall grass I slept in my first night away from home and bedded down there. Tomorrow I will see my family!

Day 22

Dear Diary,

I left Effie’s house in the morning, still determined to make it back in time for Christmas. It was early, and there were still stars in the sky as I headed north to Nimbasa City. They reminded me of Liza and the evening we spent together watching the shooting stars.

Nimbasa was just as I remembered it, and I even saw the carolers again. This time they were joined by a group of Heracross, all singing Jingle Bells and passing out chocolates to the children. I peered at them from behind a cluster of trees, not wanting to be seen, before continuing on my journey. I found myself in a small grotto on Route 5 in the evening. I think it will be safe to sleep here tonight.

Day 21

Dear Diary,

I snuck around the edge of Castelia City and onto Route 4. When I was halfway to Nimbasa City I sniffed the air and caught wind of a faint vanilla fragrance. Immediately, my belly began to rumble and I followed the scent until I reached a sandy desert. My stomach urged me to move forward which led me to what I thought was an old abandoned ruin, until a Bastiodon came out and invited me inside. Hesitantly, I entered her shelter and saw a christmas tree in the corner. A warm fire burned in the hearth and two stockings hung above. This was her home.

She led me to the kitchen where a Shieldon called Effie asked me to help her take cookies out of the oven. Effie reminded me a lot of my little sister and we laughed when the cookie cutters stuck to Effie’s forehead. She told me she’s half steel type and that parts of her body are magnetic. After our bellies were full of milk and cookies, Effie’s mother invited me to spend the night. We laid by the fire and her mother told us stories until my eyelids were heavy with sleep. That night I dreamt of prancing deerling cookies leading me back home.

-Dash

You can find Effie baking cookies in the Trading Point for all of the Pokémon there.

Day 20

Dear Diary,

Liza and I slept in and had a late breakfast consisting of some seafood and green apples we found near the beach. We spent some time wading through tide pools and admiring some Staryu and Starmie before it was time to head out. I hopped on Liza’s back, and away we went!

The trip was fairly short, but there were some rough waves that we had to fight through on our way north to Castelia. Surfing through the open ocean, with land nowhere in sight was actually pretty scary, and so I declined a battle with a Wailmer that we happened across. He seemed to understand that it would have been uncomfortable for a land Pokemon such as myself. We made landfall before sundown, and had dinner together before Liza said goodbye and headed out to sea again. We promised to write letters to each other, and I knew I would miss her. Still, I’m excited that I’m one step closer to home!

Day 19

Dear Diary,

Liza and I had a quick bite to eat for breakfast before heading toward Route 17. Christmas Eve was closing in with only five days to go. I knew it would be tough to make it home on time, but I was determined to get Aspen her presents. Because of this, Liza agreed to take me as far as Castelia City.

Route 17 was a vast sea, and I was nervous to surf on Liza’s back since I have never tried to swim in deep water before. However, once I got the rhythm of the ocean waves I had a marvelous time! The cool ocean breeze with the wind in my face made me feel alive. I saw many new Pokemon I had never seen before and even had a quick battle with a Horsea. Liza was right- I used Horn Leech on the Horsea and won the battle with no trouble!

We made landfall around sundown on a small island at the end of the route. Liza and I found a cave to spend the night in. Just outside of the cave’s mouth, we made a small fire with beachwood to keep warm and spent the evening looking for falling stars. They streaked across the night sky and as each star fell, I wished I would be with my family for Christmas. Tomorrow we will be heading back into the open ocean. I feel a bit more confident about tomorrow’s surf after today’s adventure.

Day 18

Dear Diary,

This morning I woke in a sombre mood, unwilling to admit that there was still no sign of Aspen’s presents. Liza and I met up and continued to scour the town for signs of the gifts. I was so grateful for the help, and it seemed like we were becoming fast friends. While we looked, Liza gave me some pointers on the best moves to use against different types of Pokemon. She said, for example, that since I am a grass Pokemon my moves would be especially effective against any water Pokemon. Maybe while I’m here I’ll have a chance to battle some water Pokemon.

We were searching the trees on the west side of town for the third time, and getting rather discouraged, when Liza glimpsed a shadowed figure moving through the trees. We followed it to the southernmost tip of the forest where the trees meet the beach, where we say the shadowed figure drop the last two of Aspen’s presents and an Enigma berry. With a purple flash, it was gone. We waited for a few seconds to make sure the figure was gone before Liza and I rushed over and grabbed the presents and berry. We went back to Liza’s place where we spent the night snacking on wild berries and some seafood that Liza caught. Tomorrow I head home! Hope I can make it before Christmas time.

Day 17

Dear Diary,

Nuvema Town is a much smaller town than I thought, and I had to find a place to hide for the night. I ended up behind a lab, in a small grove of trees and slept through the night. It was surprisingly comfortable, and much warmer here than it was up in the mountains. Probably since we’re by the ocean.

When I woke up, I proceeded to search the town for any clues leading to Aspen’s presents. I couldn’t find anything. During my search, I met up with a Seel named Liza near the coast. She was very nice, and offered to help me search through Nuvema, but neither of us found any clues or presents. I’m not sure what I can do- I can’t go home empty handed, Aspen would be so sad. Hopefully we’ll find something in the morning.

Day 16

Dear Diary,

We woke before sunrise and had a quick breakfast together before taking off for Nuvema Town. Lee instructed me to ride on his back, and I sheltered from the wind with the scarf mom gave me. The flight was incredible. The air was icy cold, and the flight long, but I saw a view of Unova that not many others have seen before. I’m probably the first Deerling that has seen the earth from the sky!

We started out by flying high over the ocean, and I glimpsed a pod of Lapras surfing along the coast. They looked cold, but it made me wish I had time to spend on the beach. When I bring my family to visit this part of Unova, we’ll need to make time to visit the ocean. Probably in the summer though. Lee also flew us over White Forest, where we met, and we circled the big tree in the center. It was gorgeous!

We finally made it to Nuvema Town around sundown. It was a long flight, but we saw so many beautiful things, too many to describe them all in my diary. Lee and I had dinner together, and then he had to say goodbye and started his journey back to Undella. I was sad to see him go, but I also know I will see him again.

-Dash

Day 15

Dear Diary,

The days are getting colder and my desire to return home is also growing with the Christmas holiday looming ahead. When I woke up this morning frost was covering the grass in the grotto, and after a quick breakfast I stepped out from the circle of trees and found Route 13 to be covered in several centimeters of snow.

Being cold as it was, I made my way quickly to Undella Town and located Lee the Togekiss where he was staying with his friend Pinsir. Together they were decorating the house, Pinsir putting up a wreath and Lee applying lights to the highest part of the house. They invited me in, and we sipped hot cocoa in front of the fire. I explained everything, about the presents that were stolen from Aspen, and my quest to get them back. Lee was so nice, and he offered to fly me to Nuvema Town the next morning. It’s a long flight, so we decided to get some sleep early and leave at sunup.

Day 14

Dear Diary,

When I woke up this morning the air was so cold that it was sparkling with frozen moisture. I was still tired from staying awake so late, but it was time to get going anyway. When passing through Lacunosa Town again I noticed something that I had missed the first time- it seemed there was some sort of memorial to townsfolk that had been eaten by a giant Pokemon in the distant past. Legend has it that a meteor fell from the sky with a terrifying monster inside, that would take the villagers away and eat them!

Route 13 was just as I remembered it, with lots of hills and deep grass. I made my way back to the grotto for the night, knowing it was safe and relatively hard to find for trainers and other wild Pokemon. The stars had already come up by the time I reached the entrance, and the wind was chilling me through my fur and down to my bones. Frost was already beginning to form on the tips of the grass, and I knew that tomorrow was going to be even colder than today.

Day 13

Dear Diary,

It was a bit frustrating to have to travel back the way I came, but fortunately since I knew the way it made traveling much faster. I traversed Route 11 with ease and crossed under the Village Bridge swiftly and without seeing any other Pokemon or humans. I was feeling very confident, and perhaps that was my problem.

When I reached Route 12, where I had planned to rest for the night, a trainer and his Paras caught me off guard. I’m not sure what frightened me more- that I was alone against an experienced trainer or that there was no escaping this battle. I steeled myself for the battle and concentrated on the moves I’d practiced against the flock of Tranquill at home. Feint attack, jump kick, tackle- before I knew it, I was victorious! For the rest of the night, I was high on adrenaline, and finally settled down for sleep after midnight. Tomorrow’s gonna be a long day.

Day 12

Dear Diary,

Route 11 was easy enough to cross. After studying Max’s behavior yesterday, I was able to avoid humans in a different way than I did in my forest at home. I reached Opelucid City in no time and found the town high in spirits with many dragon type Pokemon. I watched in amazement as a Dragonite rocketed by, only pausing briefly to deliver a Christmas parcel. I tilted my head and thought of Lee, the Togekiss I met on Route 14. He could fly as swiftly as a Dragonite.

When Dragonite sped off I noticed a glint at the base of a frozen fountain. I pranced over to inspect further and found a note with a silver bow attached, addressed to me. It was from Aspen’s present thief! The note instructed me to meet the bandit in Nuvema Town. I wrinkled my nose and fretted about how far I would have to travel, when Lee and his ability to fly came to mind. I decided I would travel back to Undella Town to find my old friend.

-Dash

Day 11

Dear Diary,

After not getting enough sleep the previous night, I woke up late and left Lacunosa Town behind at midday. I headed west to Route 12 and came across a female trainer who tried to battle me with a Croconaw. It was my first battle encounter and she caught me off guard. I was a Deerling caught in headlights when a powerful shock crossed the ground and my opponents ran off.

I scanned the area for the source of the electricity when a large Luxray with strange markings approached me and asked me if I was alright. I was a little embarrassed I wasn’t able to handle the situation myself, but shook it off and thanked him for his help. He told me his name was Max and we walked together to a massive stone bridge with houses atop it.

Exhausted from the day, I decided to bunker down under the bridge away from the humans. I invited Max to stay but he told me he needed to keep moving. I was a little sad and felt less secure when he left, but I silently vowed I would become as strong as a Luxray one day.

Day 10

Dear Diary,

Flecks of snow tickled my nose as I arrived to Lacunosa Town at sunrise. This town is so quaint and surrounded by brick walls, it is like something from one of Aspen’s story books. The villagers seem merry with Christmas spirit by singing carols and putting up decorations of garland and bows with their Pokemon. I felt a slight pang in my heart as I thought of my family decorating our forest back home.

I tried my best to keep to the shadows, but found it difficult since I wanted to partake in the festivities. At dusk a Litwick caught me peering at him and his trainer, he was able to coax me out after his trainer left and introduced himself as Hubert. Hubert is a friendly Litwick with a heart as bright as the fire on top his head.

As the dark closed in on us, I was afraid his flame would attract attention from some trainers, but Hubert explained to me the villagers are afraid to leave their houses at night. He told me an eerie tale about an ice dragon Pokemon that once plagued Lacunosa Town. The monster would come at night and steal humans and Pokemon alike, never to be seen again.

That night, as I lay down for sleep, bone chilling winds bit my body and morning couldn’t come fast enough.

Day 9

Dear Diary,

I woke up this morning to a slight frost on the tips of the grass and sunlight filtering in through the trees of the grotto. It reminded me of home in a way, and I realized how much I really miss my mom and Aspen. Hopefully I will make it home soon.

I left the grotto not long after, and continued my journey along Route 13. There were some trainers here with their Pokemon, and I studiously avoided showing myself to them, in case they tried to challenge me. However, I was able to watch 2 battles that really impressed me. One was between a Teddiursa and a Swablu, where the Swablu did the most impressive dive from above. Sometimes I wish I could fly! The other battle was between a Mareep and a Minun. I was mostly impressed by the Mareep’s ability to call thunder. It was so fortunate that I was far away from the battle, I might’ve gotten shocked!

Anyways, I think it will be simple enough for me to make it to Lacunosa Town by morning. Then just 2 more days till Opelucid City!

Day 8

Dear Diary,

Togekiss and I woke up early, had breakfast together, and made our way around the small bay to the village. A Scyther was there putting up snowflakes around the town to commemorate the Christmas season. Togekiss and I said our goodbyes after helping the Scyther for a bit. He was a great traveling companion, and we promised to meet again soon.

Surprisingly, it didn’t take me long to locate another one of Aspen’s gifts under a beach umbrella near the west side of the town. Another note was attached, this time directing me to head to Opelucid City. I decided to head out right away and made my way to Route 13. There are lots of hills in this area, and I ended up finding a grotto with a few trees and some thick grass to spend the night in.

Day 7

Dear Diary,

This morning I woke up at dawn and continued my journey on Route 15. There was some fog and a steep climb down to the base of the hill, but I eventually made it to White Forest village without any incidents. In the center of the village stood the tallest tree I’d ever seen, and I instinctively knew that the tree was something special. Someday I want to bring my family to White Forest to visit.

About noon, I headed over to get some water from a creek near the entrance to Route 14 and bumped into a Togekiss named Lee who was also there to get a drink. We hit it off and I found out he was also headed to Undella Town so we decided to travel together. Route 14 was filled with lots of tall grass and while I was avoiding other wild Pokemon there Togekiss was able to soar above. We made great time with Togekiss there to help guide me and we decided to sleep near the edge of Undella. Making here half a day earlier than expected, I will be able to get an early start on trying to find Aspen’s presents. Hopefully Undella Town will have some answers.

-Dash

Day 6

Dear Diary,

I headed out of Nimbasa City at sunrise and travelled east along Route 16. Several trainers were battling with their Pokemon on the road, and it was tough slipping by without them noticing me but I managed. I thought briefly about visiting Lostlorn Forest to the north- it’s where mom grew up- but decided against it. I really need to keep moving.

I finally made it past Route 16 and to the edge of Marvelous Bridge. The wind was cold I was really starting to tell that Christmas is close. Part of me was hoping to see the Legendary Cresselia that I’d heard about from stories when I was little, but of course Cresselia wasn’t there. Swanna were flying overhead and I ran across the bridge as quickly as I could since they were dive bombing me.

Once across the bridge I made my way to the Poke Transfer Lab on Route 15. A Mamoswine was helping decorate the building with lights, and I decided to sleep under some fir trees nearby. The Christmas cheer made my heart warm and think of my mom and little sister waiting for me back home.

Day 5

Dear Diary,

This morning I entered Nimbasa City intent on discovering what happened to Aspen’s Christmas presents. Many Pokemon were wandering the streets with and without trainers, so I wasn’t particularly worried about getting caught.

Most of the morning and early afternoon was completely unsuccessful and I was starting to get discouraged. Finally, after hours of searching, I ended up at an amusement park where it seems the culprit left a clue for me. There, underneath the ferris wheel, was a single present belonging to Aspen, with a note attached instructing me to go to Undella Town if I wanted the others. Guess I still have a long road ahead of me.

-Dash

Day 4

Dear Diary,

This morning I awoke to the cool ocean breeze on my face, and Wingull flying in the air overhead. I spent some time enjoying the morning sun and nibbling on some berries before making my way to the Drawbridge. While loitering about on the edge of the harbour, musicians in flamboyant costumes made their way through town singing Christmas carols and playing various instruments. I swished my tail in time to the beat and, while everyone was distracted by the parade, scampered across the bridge completely unseen.

The rest of the afternoon was spent traversing Route 5. At one point I saw a wild Minccino battling a trainer and her Lillipup in the trees. It was very exciting to watch, and I wish I could have gotten closer. Tonight I’m spending in a large field outside Nimbasa City, and tomorrow I’ll head in to see what I can find.

-Dash

Day 3

Dear Diary,

Mother saw me off early this morning while Aspen was still sleeping. She wrapped me in her favorite blue scarf and walked with me to the edge of our forest. From there on, I traveled alone. Most of the day I spent on the edges of the trainer’s Route 6, to ensure that I didn’t get lost. Avoiding other Pokemon was relatively simple since I grew up in the forest, but my family has never traveled far from our grove before and so losing my way is a very real possibility.

By nightfall I made my way to the edge of Driftveil City. Tomorrow I will have to try to cross the Driftveil Drawbridge without being seen by any trainers, or they might try to capture me. For tonight, I’ve bedded down in some high grass near the south edge of the city, by the bay. It’s going to be my first night alone.

-Dash

Help keep Dash company by adopting more eggs!

Day 2

Dear Diary,

Last night my family was plagued by nightmares, and when we woke up this morning all of the presents we left for Aspen under the tree were missing. Under the tree where the presents should have been was a note, with a message instructing us to come to Nimbasa City if we wanted the presents returned.

After some discussion, mother and I decided that I should be the one to travel to Nimbasa City. Aspen is too young to travel so far, and mother needs to stay home with her. I promised her I would be careful and have been participating in mock battles with a flock of Tranquill that lives nearby for some time now anyway. Hopefully I will be able to handle myself on the road. Mother is gathering some berries for me to take tonight, and I plan to head out in the morning.

-Dash

Day 1

Dear Diary,

Since this is my first entry I will introduce myself. I’m a Deerling named Dash. I was born in December, so my coat is brown like the bare branches of a tree in winter. My little sister is a spring-born Deerling named Aspen. We’ve made our home here on Unova Route 6 with our mother, and have become friends with some of the scientists that are working nearby. Someday, I hope one of them will introduce me to a trainer that I can travel and grow stronger with. It’s my dream!

This morning, since it’s the first day of December, my family and I decorated a tree in our forest and put some presents for Aspen underneath. Somehow, I know this is going to be a wonderful Christmas.
